The 2007 session of the Louisiana Legislation is in its last week. Several bills have been passed yet a number of others have failed or are still being debated.

Rep. Roy Burrell spent the entire session working on securing funds for the completion of I-49 North and adding the inter-city corridor to the construction.

Newcomer Rep. Patrick Williams had several bills passed through each house, including House concurrent Resolution 218 which will provide a crosswalk or traffic light to the 4600 block of North Market.

One of Rep. Ernest Baylor’s concerns for this session was physical fitness as he introduced two bills related to the matter. House Bill 728 requires public schools to provide at least 30 minutes of physical activity everyday for students in the seventh and eight grades.

Of the 28 bills Rep. Billy Montgomery filed, 10 were related to taxes. House Bill 36 would return certain individual income tax relates and brackets to those in effect to prior to the “Stelly Plan.”

Rep. Jane smith says that Louisiana has a history of supporting troops during the Iraq War and her bill, HB 257, gives a one-time $500 payment to Louisiana military personnel deployed on active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In addition to making June “Hemophilia Awareness Month,” Sen. Lydia Jackson made a number of commendations for dedication and support in the study of neuroscience. She also introduced Senate Bill 105 that would permit seniors and handicapped voters to submit a letter advising of their condition, thereby authorizing early voting by mail for one year.

The 2007 Regular Legislative Session must come to an end no later than 6:00p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2007.
